Mental health and mood are rarely talked about or openly discussed. Mental health refers to your cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well being - how you think, feel, and behave. The term “mental health” is sometimes used to mean an absence of a mental disorder, as in the absence of mental illness. Mental health is important as it affects your daily life, relationships, and your physical health.
Your emotional health is also important as it's a vital part of your life and impacts your thoughts, acts, behaviors and emotions. Being emotionally healthy can improve your productivity and effectiveness in daily activities like work, school or caregiving.

mental wellness is important
Your mind is a complicated thing. Your mental state is very often not limited to your conscious. Your mood and mental state also affect your physical self and influences how your body functions. Have you noticed how people who are constantly under stress often look physically tired, haggard and older than their age?

It's stress and a worn mental state that cause these physical manifestations. The lack of mental health, mental “fitness” very often lead to emotional distress and even affect physical health.
Recognize the need for mental wellness. You are constantly exposed to stress, it comes in many forms and levels. It starts as a baby, when you cried for attention but your needs were ignored or delayed. As an adult you experience stress as the result of day-to-day activities. The demands of work, family and social activities often put pressure on you.
The first step towards ensuring mental wellness includes identifying symptoms of unnecessary stress. Some distractions or concerns are easily dealt with while others require extra effort to resolve, sometimes even requiring professional help.
Recognize resources for mental wellness. First recognize that mental wellness is a real need. Don’t ignore the signs and symptoms of mental distress because you are used to believing that it's “all in your head”.

Very often, you do not recognize the problem until it has already affected you in a negative way. If you have a problem you can’t handle, it’s important to use the right kind of knowledge to help maintain mental wellness.

Read books, magazines and find other sources of information on the subject. If there's help available, then take advantage of it and use it.
Generally, though, the best source of information regarding the state of your mental health is you. You know your limits and what you deal with everyday. You should also recognize the factors that affect your mental health when you encounter them. Ensure that you take care of your mental health, learn to identify situations, events and people that are stressful to you so you will know how best to manage them when you need to.
Steps to ensuring mental wellness. Once you identify your stress triggers and the things that adversely affect your mental wellness, there are certain steps you need to take:
  • Assess your mental health regularly. Determine your ideal state of mind and then try to see how far you veer off from it periodically. The point here is to take note of 'trends' in your emotional well-being. Have you been feeling happy and satisfied lately or are you generally depressed and have been for some time?
  • Set aside time to focus on your mental wellness everyday. Taking a few short breaks to relax everyday can do a lot for your mental wellness. Recognize that it is normal for people to have concerns and worries but that what you need to focus on are real solutions. To do this effectively, you need to make a conscious effort to manage your mental wellness.
  • Choose your most effective ways to manage negative thoughts. People have different ways of dealing with stress and unpleasant emotions. When these thoughts enter your head, learn to recognize them and then interrupt the flow. Think of more pleasant things or distract yourself by doing more productive activities. These thoughts will probably appear from time to time but the key is to prevent them from dominating you.

  • Learn to prioritize. Very often, the stress that affects mental wellness is caused by the lack of prioritizing skills. Make a conscious effort of completing tasks according to importance. Even if you have a list of 20 things to do in one day, for example, being able to complete seven of them before lunch hour can help reduce the pressure on you.
  • Challenge your mind. The mind can get a bit rusty when it focuses on only one or two things. Learn to tread on unfamiliar ground and challenge yourself. Learn a new skill, for example, such as playing a musical instrument or learning chess. Unfamiliar things make the mind work harder because there is new information to process.

Brain exercises are mental activities that can help in keeping your brain active all the time. If you must have a sound mental system, you've got to exercise your brain regularly. You can easily achieve a healthy mind when you keep your brain properly exercised. Any activity that can keep your brain engaged in the positive sense can be considered a positive brain exercise:
Meditation - This is the art emptying your mind of various issues while you focus on a particular matter. It's also a process of contemplating on a subject or series of subject in order to draw some necessary conclusions. Your brain is the seat of mental activity like meditation. When you meditate, you're invariably exercising your brain for greater efficiency.

Your level of understanding is normally improved when you read voraciously. However, you have to be very careful on the kind of books or novels you read. If you read obscene or horrific works, you can get your mind filled up with ugly images and your brain will be greatly distorted.

Writing - Get your brain properly exercised through writing. In most cases, creative writing is the best form of endeavor that can keep your brain busy. If you're the type that uses computer to write, your level of understating is sure to improve. This is because, your brain works faster as you type on the keyboard while at the same time, you're thinking out the wordings you put on. The more you write on daily basis, the more active your brain becomes in dealing with issues of life.
Researching - Get your brain exercised by engaging in research activities. Your brain is always very active and alive when you're researching on a topic. If you're doing the research in a library, you'll discover that your brain is always looking for the right thing to pick. The same scenario happens when you do your research through the internet. Your brain is always at work when you carry out any form of research.
Brain Stimulation - Stimulation is the process of arousing your brain to tackle difficult issues successfully. You can use brain teasers to achieve the stimulation process. You can equally solve game puzzles and mathematical problems or play chess in order to get your brain stimulated.
